Walk ALS New Haven 2024

Chief Butterfly Princesses

Welcome to our team page. Tim wanted to tell you more about our team. This team is organized around supporting Rose Spielman.  The team’s name comes from when Rose started working on her second textbook. There was a core group of six, and the others all had important work titles, so she decided she would be Chief Butterfly Princess and that is what they called her.

ALS is a devastating disease. While Rose first lost her ability to walk, losing her ability to speak has been unimaginably frustrating.  Rose, as many of you know, is very social, and now she relies almost solely on an eye gaze device (TobiiDynavox) to make her thoughts known letter by letter, word by word. Still, Rose completed her second textbook this summer through Wisewire/OpenStax. Her first, Introduction to Psychology, is now used by 100,000+ every year!  Rose also recently retired from the State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services, where she helped intellectually disabled people get connected with the services they need. She also has taught countless psychology classes as an adjunct professor at colleges across Connecticut.

She has also been a great mom to her two children, Tess and Calum, as well as a wonderful wife and partner of 25 years.. She is supported by beautiful circles of family and friends who are also family we mutually choose. Her caring and ever-present awareness of what matters or concerns those around her has immensely impacted those in her circles.  We all walk for her, physically or in spirit. We want you to join us by physically joining the team and walking with us on October 6 in New Haven or donating to a team member. Thank you!
